Summary

For the past ten years of the Game Boy’s life, the handheld has been considered to be strictly a 2D platform, and until recently, this has been the case. Some games have included small sections of simple 3D that have impressed consumers, but Championship Motocross 2001 has become the first 3D racing game on the platform. With the Game Boy now coming to the end of its life span as a mainstream product, this THQ game could remain the most advanced title on the platform to exist.

First and foremost, Motocross 2001 is by far the most comprehensive of Game Boy versions to date. It features up to date statistics, with as many as thirty real-life stars of the sport, including the game’s sponsor, Ricky Carmichael. When beginning a game, you have the choice of a number of game modes to participate in. There are quick, non-time consuming events, such as freestyle, or for those of you feeling more confident, there is a championship season mode. There are literally dozens of tracks that can be raced, and while they are reasonably simple to race, the computer AI of the other characters ensures that you will have a significant challenge on your hands. Making Motocross 2001 more like a simulator than an arcade game is the ability to tune your cars to make them perform better.

As a complete game Motocross 2001 is truly amazing to look at and offers a challenge that will make even the most experienced player struggle, and that can’t be bad thing.
