Summary

It has been quite some time since the racing genre received a new slant on gameplay. Although the likes of Gran Turismo have proved to be the best in their league, it was only a matter of time before racing fans cried out for something new. Insane, from Codemasters (creators of the Colin McRae series) looks as though it’s going to give gamers what they want. Leaving the linear path of the racing genre behind, Insane brings the mayhem of off-road challenges to a new level.

Challenges take place across vast landscapes in many locations across the globe, including Utah State, Algeria and, a little closer to home, Ireland. Once the race has begun, it’s up to you to reach a specified checkpoint before any of the other drivers. Checkpoints are in fixed locations within the given landscape, but can also be in the most awkward to reach places. Once a checkpoint has been reached by any driver, a new checkpoint will become the target. The first player to beat the other drivers to five checkpoints is the winner.

Some of the more influential variables of the game include the landscapes. Drive too slow, and you won’t make it up a hill; drive too fast, and you may find yourself plummeting down the face of a 200ft cliff. Be aware of car damage, it can lose you the battle.

For such a simple game, there is a lot to do here, with many of Insane’s features remaining locked until certain requirements are fulfilled. If you think you’re up to the challenge, you’re insane, and well qualified to play this game.
