Summary
Who would have thought that the world’s first coin operated video game of 1969 would still have a presence in the 21st century? Well, like it or not, Pong is back, and it looks better than ever. Although there are 3D versions of the game available, the GameBoy Color seems to be the most appropriate platform for the release of this ancient 2D classic. New for GameBoy Color, retro fans alike are gonna love this one.
It goes without saying that releasing the original Pong by itself would have been a silly mistake and wouldn’t achieve any kind of status within the industry. Taking this into account, the developers have incorporated a few extra playing elements that add variety to the game, but that also retain the great gameplay of the original. Besides the inclusion of the original game, there are also four other playing areas that add their own unique tangents to the game. The bat with which you play also has a few hidden surprises, allowing you to cup the ball if you’re lucky enough to catch a bonus item in the game. There are also obstacles in the playing area that, if you’re not careful, will rebound your ball, losing you the point.
It seems that certain areas of gaming are slowly taking a turn towards the old style methods of gameplay. Pong is a prime example of this, and with the original game incorporated, this one’s a real treat for retro fans.
