Summary

In recent years, EA have made certain game genres more popular than previous attempts from other software houses. Their ability to successfully introduce traditionally American sports into European territories has no doubt been proved with the release of a number of NHL, NFL and NBA titles. With Ice Hockey being perhaps the most hardcore American sport, and certainly the most violent, this particular title, appropriately titled NHL Rock the Rink, looks to be the most comprehensive to date.

Before playing a match, there are a few options that you should take advantage of. As well as being able to select any of the NHL’s 28 teams, you can create your own gang of stick-wielding menaces. You are able to choose from a number of newly designed logos, and even specify your team’s strengths and weaknesses. The rules of a match are set as standard, but will be more recognisable to players with experience of the sport. Arenas are reasonably detailed, and game physics are as accurate as can be expected. Arcade style methods of shooting have also been incorporated, including deadly moves like the Tornado and Corkscrew. An additional extra gives players the opportunity to play old school hockey in one of ten rundown areas.

Rock the Rink is quite a comprehensive game, but at the same time, is a lot of fun to play, whether you are a fan of the sport or not.
