Summary

Tonight, Matthew, I’m going to be Telly Savalas in The Dirty Dozen! Resplendent in all his plastosheen glory, Sarge is back. 3DO’s Army Men series gets an added boost with this more than worthy addition. If you thought that their ‘Air Attack’ game was a gas, then I can guarantee you’ll really enjoy this.

Sarge is back on the ground for this title, which ostensibly looks like it may be a little too close to the original Army Men for it’s own good. No fear, all you wannabe soldiers out there. Sarge’s Heroes, thanks to the good folks at Naughty Dog and 3DO, comes with added tweaks and surprises, and some top-notch weaponry to cause havoc with, as the Green, once more, look to overcome the Tan.

Yeah, so Sarge’s Heroes initial action sequences take place in familiar territory, vast expanses of grass, punctuated with official buildings and narrow roads. Don’t switch off your console yet, though. Make it through the first couple of levels, and Sarge can begin to kick Tan bottom in a domestic stylee. A visit to the bathroom is the first port of call, as you attempt to rid the rim of the bathtub of the Tan scum. Be forewarned, even on the easy level, things can get a little hairy once you find yourself in house. The Tan are a determined bunch, no matter how much death and destruction you may visit upon them, they keep on coming at you.

Army Men:Sarge’s Heroes is an absolute hoot to play. Whether you choose to go in there with all guns blazing, or you prefer to stealthily sneak around the enemy, there’s oodles of fun here. And to all of those supposedly mature adults old enough to remember keeping their soldiers in an old biscuit tin (I’m one), stop scoffing, and get yourself a copy of this game. The memories will flood back.
