Summary

Coinciding nicely with the release of the film, X-men: Mutant Academy is available for the Sony Playstation. If you can’t get enough of these characters, this is your chance to pit them against each other in a fight to the end. The use of superheroes in fighting games is a logical progression, their abilities work so well as special and super moves. Heroes like Cyclops, Wolverine, Toad are here plus loads of other X-men favourites.

Mutant Academy features realistic 3D fighters but plays more like a classical 2D game. The perspective is locked apart from when you do fancy moves or win the round. This approach works well and allows you to concentrate on the on-screen action. There are several gameplay modes to choose from including arcade, versus, survival, training and finally cerebro. Cerebro mode is designed so you can unlock all of the secrets in the game by completing various goals.

The gameplay is fun while managing to be simple and complicated at the same time. The fighter with the most energy left at the end of the round wins. There are chain combos that allow you to link your normal moves together and super moves that are harder to pull off but have devastating results. Through practice, you’ll have the characters down and big multi-hitting combos will become commonplace.

X-men Mutant Academy is a challenging and addictive title. Combined with the constantly evolving two-player mode, there is plenty here to keep you playing for months.
