Summary

Out on the snowy slopes of the mountains is just about the only place where you won’t get a slap in the face for daring to tailgrab, and a stalefish tweak isn’t some exotic dish on a menu full of typos. Snowboarding, for the uninitiated, is about strapping your feet to what is basically a strip of wood, and flinging yourself down a steep incline. The biggest trick of all is the successful conversion of this most extreme of sports to Sony’s console. It has been done three times before, under the auspices of Cool Boarders, with varying degrees of accomplishment. How on earth can a snowboarding sim warrant a fourth instalment?

Narrow your eyes and you may not notice that there are more courses and authentic riders, the graphics are sharper, and the control method is much simpler than its immediate predecessor (you guessed it) Coolboarders 3. Otherwise, number four in the Coolboarders series is not exactly a huge progression from its forerunners. Just how much variation can there be in slopes, half-pipes, slalom courses and the like? Let Cool Boarders 4 show you.

If this is your first stab at a snowboarding game, then you will not be disappointed. The contestants look good in their expensive clobber, the scenery is Christmas card-pretty, and if your fingers and thumbs are nimble enough, you’ll have plenty of digit-shredding fun, no fear.
