Summary

If you are fan of 2D beat-em-ups, you probably have the utmost respect for Capcom. Even if you love SNK, Namco or Sega, when it comes to this kind of game, Capcom practically wrote the book. Jo Jo’s Bizarre Adventure for the PlayStation is the latest and craziest fighting game yet from the Japanese giants. If you’ve got your dragon punch motions down and you’re timing cap on, step up to the new challenge.

What sets Jo Jo apart from all of the other fighting games is its ingenious use of the stand system. Each character has a spirit alter-ego, or stand, that can be called with the press of a button. You can attack with your stand and then carry the combo on yourself, similar to the assist characters of the Marvel Vs. Capcom games. If you execute joystick movements and then press the stand key, your stand will perform multi-hitting moves that have a bigger window of opportunity for continuous attacks.
The game engine allows juggle and chain possibilities and there is room for linking your super moves into your combos.

Jo Jo’s Bizarre Adventure is split into three main parts, Story mode, Arcade mode and versus mode. The story mode is interesting at first but the long loading times and short fights lower it’s re-playability appeal. Arcade mode lets you practice your moves and develop your tactics against a computer controlled opponent. The best mode is the versus mode, Capcom knows how to make playable, balanced fighting games. Jo Jo boasts colourful backgrounds, sprites and smooth animation.

If you’re looking for a slightly off the wall, original beat-em-up with a lot of gameplay and depth, Jo Jo’s Bizarre Adventure is recommended.
