Summary

Typically an American sport, Ice Hockey games were formerly a weak genre in the UK market. But American developers and publishers, EA has pushed their hockey games quite aggressively into western shores, and with success. In typical EA style, the NHL franchise is pushed every year with a new date tagged onto a new game. This time round, it’s NHL 2000.

First and foremost, the 2000 season edition expectedly has some improved statistics and more up to date figures. The game once again features the majority of major NHL teams from the States. Visually, NHL 2000 has not been improved greatly over its predecessors, but to compensate, EA has included a plethora and brand new features. Game speed has also been improved, making the game much more intense and thoroughly exciting. Also, the use of analogue control been mastered, and causes NHL to perform fluidly. In terms of gameplay dynamics, NHL 2000 offers more control and an increased number of ways to score. An instant action option is available for non-hardcore players of the sport, but new to the series is a Career mode that will suit hockey aficionados perfectly. Those of you eager to master the sport are advised to take advantage of the game’s tutorial section. Here, you will be able to practice all aspects of the game, allowing you to improve your all round performance.

Regarding hockey, EA does indeed have the best and most comprehensive selection date, and until NHL 2001 hits the shelves, NHL 2000 should suffice.
