Summary

Battle Zone is one of the late 90’s more popular strategy titles, and boasts a lovely looking collection of real-time rendered environments with truly stunning and compelling gameplay to match.

In a nutshell, you are the game’s hero, a high-level commander charged with making crucial decisions within a conflict-ridden and futuristic setting. It sounds really hard, but your goal remains the same throughout – to gain control of a superior alien technology in a deadly space race.

Players have the opportunity to pilot any of 25 fictional but awesome anti-gravity war machines, fully equipped with a plethora of devastating weapons. These include the traditional mortars and mines as well as some slightly more outrageous weapons. The Thunder Device, for example, is even capable of triggering earthquakes. Okay, it’s hardly realistic, but it’s major fun!

Players must also co-ordinate full-scale attacks, using 30 unique units such as tanks, infantry and mobile assault turrets. You can even call in artillery, deploy wingmen and manage resources, all from within your tank.

One of Battle Zone’s more memorable gameplay experiences involved bailing a doomed tank, parachuting to safety, then using a sniper rifle to take over another unit. It’s all very American and it’s all great fun. Just don’t take it too seriously.
