Summary

When Sim City was released on the SNES and PC, EA knew it was onto something good. A couple of years later, a game called Sim City 2000 came out of their R&D studios. Labelled as a classic right from the beginning, Sim City 2000 is arguably the best management game ever produced for the PC platform.

Improving on the top-down perspective of the original, Sim City 2000 has been refined into an isometric scrolling game. The land volume, mass and terrain has also been improved. Landscapes are no longer flat, and often have features such as volcanoes and steep valleys. The game’s grid style system has been improved, giving the player literally thousands of places to construct their residential, commercial and industrial zones. Once your building zones have been set, power has been established, and a road network has been constructed, you can turn up the speed and watch your Sim City grow into a bustling metropolis.

On the management side of things, you must take into consideration your popularity with population of your city. A good public opinion can be maintained through reasonable taxes, plenty of emergency services and a clean environment. If these aspects are ignored, you will soon find your city map transforming into a black sea of abandoned buildings.

Sim City 2000 offers a balanced gameplay experience. At no point through the game will you be thinking, “why isn’t this working” or “that shouldn’t be happening”. Any mistakes the player makes are obvious and are usually easily fixed. This doesn’t make the game easy, just easier to understand. And as a result, Sim City 2000 is a pleasure to play.
