Summary

Bust a Groove, follows on from games like Parappa the Rappa and co. This is a rhythm based dancing simulation where you have to time your moves to the beats of the music. On the fourth beat of every bar, you have to press X or O, depending on what is being shown to you. After a couple of successful bars, different directions are shown and you must copy these directional moves before you press your button.

Bust a Groove is a fun game that is best played with two-players but is still enjoyable as a single player experience. In the game you go head to head with your dance floor opponent in a showdown. The camera swings towards the player that is dancing best and making the longest combos. The dancer that the camera finishes on wins.

You often have the choice of two combos to choose from while you are dancing. The ones on the bottom lead to much harder combos. Trying to press six directions and still hitting the O in time will take some practice. There are even hidden high scoring combos to discover that are completely different to the moves displayed.

To add spice to the gameplay, in every round you have two attacks available to you. If you press triangle instead of X or O, you will perform a devastating move on your opponent. If it hits, their combo multiplier will be reduced to nothing and you will look like the better dancer. There is an escape button, if you press square as the attack is coming you will avoid it. Following the moves to a fast paced song in time while watching out for attacks is an engaging gaming experience.

The music in Bust a Groove is catchy and varies considerably in tempo. The animation is stylish and well done. Because Bust a Groove is relatively easy to play, it makes it an ideal party game.
