Summary

Yet another World Cup tie-in (where would we be without it?), Three Lions comes along with virtually no fanfare. Just the titular emblem on the front cover, and a photograph of a sweaty trio of Ince, Beckham and Gascoigne on the back, and very little else. Either this game needs no glitzy introduction or it's simply a nuts and bolts footy sim.

It's a strange beast for sure, infuriatingly so at times. The immediate impression is that it looks not dissimilar to EA's FIFA series, except the colours are a lot more vivid, lurid even. However, once into the game, it couldn't possibly be more different. When playing against the computer, the artificial intelligence of your opponents is so good that it's a helluva challenge just to get into a scoring position, never mind actually getting a shot on goal. The goalkeepers are a pretty talented bunch anyway, it's hard to put the ball past them.

Football, Brian , is all about scoring goals, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, and the major difference between this and any other football title is it's unique targeting system when shooting for the onion bag. As your attacker approaches the goal, an orange dot appears between the posts and by using the directional buttons you choose where to aim for. Believe me , this takes a lot of getting used to, but hey, there's nothing like a near miss.

Options-wise, there's not a great deal going on, tactical changes are not on the menu, just simple subsitutions, and a choice of friendly matches or a tournament based on the league and knockout style of the World Cup.

Three Lions is a bit of an enigma : it has a lot going for it in some departments but is seriously lacking in others. Strictly for the less discerning football fan.
