Summary

Now this is the kind of videogame that the Dreamcast needs. The kind of game every platform and person needs.

At the time of release, Ecco the dolphin is one of the most original and beautiful games ever created. It’s hard to describe the feeling of freedom and serenity you feel as you swim around in your underwater heaven. You really feel like you’re weightless and the world is a different place. This is a game to get absorbed and lost in. A game that is more relaxing and soothing than a massage.

Sometimes videogames allow you to do or be something that just isn’t possible in everyday life. Sometimes videogames let you play them in the way that you want. In a world where many games have become stereotyped, Ecco gives you the freedom to explore, play or tackle the missions as you wish.

Oh, we almost forgot there is a future to save. For five hundred years dolphins and humans had lived together in harmony, fellowship and unity. Together they set out to explore the great unknown. They went on mission through the universe offering friendship to all who would accept it. Until they discovered an evil enemy from darkest space called the ‘foe’ who are bent on destruction and became jealous of the Earth. A joint invention called the ‘guardian’ was created to provide a forcefield to protect the planet. Until one day the ‘guardian’ was destroyed and it becomes Ecco’s duty to gather the pieces and save the future.

The missions that you have to accomplish in Ecco are well thought out and appropriate to being a dolphin. For example, after the enemy attack rocks fall into the water trapping a baby whale. Ecco needs to recruit two other dolphins to help him move the rocks. In return for saving her baby, the mother whale blocks the strong current allowing Ecco to make progress.

Ecco the Dolphin is one game that really stands out.
