Summary

Colony Wars: Vengeance is set several years after the original CW. After the League of Free Worlds had sealed the solar warp hole and effectively cut off the Empire from the rest of the galaxy, discontent reigned. As resources dwindled, innocent people starved and the survivors split into warring factions. When all seemed doomed to destruction, a mysterious leader came along and called for unity in the Empire. Unity was the key to winning the war against the League, a war that would be fought amongst the stars, to regain the Empire’s rightful place.

You play the part of a young navy pilot, Mertens, charged with playing your part in the overthrow of the League of Free Worlds. Your missions are explained in a full briefing session, and the unfolding tale of the rest of the game very much depends on your success or failure. Missions become more difficult as you progress anyway, but a series of failed missions will make things even harder. The game’s filmic presentation is just as impressive as the original Colony Wars, and as you thrust and tumble around the skies, you can almost sense the weightlessness. The thrusting and firing controls can take a while to get used to individually. Once you have managed that, combining them is the only way you’re going to succeed.

Colony Wars: Vengeance isn’t just all about flying around the darkened skies, firing willy-nilly at anything that moves. Its complicated mission-based play means it’s a ‘blast ‘em up’ requiring brainpower.
