Summary

You can almost picture the kids in computer stores across the world when Shadow of the Beast first came to the Amiga - mouths agape, eyes glazed.
The fact that Shadow of the Beast's gameplay was simplistic didn't matter. With numerous layers of parallax a scrolling, fluid animation, masses of colour, atmospheric music and enemies large enough to fill most of the screen, who needs gameplay?
Of course, every game does. With a repertoire comprising of running, jumping, punching and shooting, you must take out wave upon wave of enemy, pickup the occassional object or key required for later use, and destroy many end of level bosses. This, coupled with some serious level design flaws and an incredibly high difficulty level, sees many players quitting long before the end of the game.
