The ease with which on-line play is established is exemplary of the thought that has been put into
Burnout Paradise. Every aspect of the game has been considered and designed to facilitate a free-flowing, open and loose gameplay style. While this does not sound particularly amazing in itself - many games have done it previously. It is particularly amazing when you consider that it does so while maintaining all of the aspects of a game, which had previously been extremely linear and serial in structure. It is this smoothness, this intuitiveness that makes
Burnout: Paradise an outstanding piece of software. It is not only outstanding from a playability point of view, but from a usability point of view too.
Is
Burnout Paradise perfect. No... no, it isn't. Sometimes you DO find yourself driving around looking for an event to take part in. But the flip side of that is that you are not constantly forced to take part in events that you do not like, or cannot win. For me, that's a coin that landed right side up. This is because even if you do have to cruise Paradise (the city) looking for events to enter, cruising it is fun. You can flip into Showtime mode and bounce to the next event intersection or you can head on over to the right (or left) side of the road and dodge all these idiots who are driving the wrong way along it, building boost all the time. Cruising Paradise City is paradise... and I greatly prefer it to the endless dog and pony show of going round and round a track.
So, as I write this a few days before the UK release of
Burnout, there's a fresh copy laying there on the office desk and it's saying to me; it’s screaming to me, "Oh, won't you please take me hooooooome". And you know what? I will!
SPOnG Score: 96%
Burnout was already a firm favourite in the SPOnG office but, after five iterations (six if you include 'Dominator') even we were becoming a bit inured to its charms. But Burnout Paradise has changed the landscape of driving games for good. And it’s changed it for the better. I look at it this way, every word I write is another second I am not playing Burnout Paradise... but it's so good I just HAD to tell you about it. Done. Buy it! Now... I wanna go to Paradise City.
