Graftgold

Got info on Graftgold?
Full name: Graftgold Ltd
Established: 1984
Closed: 1998

Borne out of ST Software sooner after owner Steve Turner asked Andrew Braybrook to work along-side, converting Steve's ZX Spectrum games to the Dragon 32 computer. Graftgold produced over 30 games on platforms ranging from Dragon 32, Spectrum and C64 up to Sony PlayStation. Stand-out original titles include Paradroid, Uridium, Fire & Ice and Virocop, and arcade conversions including Flying Shark, Ironman Off Road Racer and the near arcade-perfect conversions of Rainbow Islands.

Its early titles were published by Hewson and then Telecomsoft under the Firebird and Rainbird labels. Later, the company's games were published by Virgin, Warner, SEGA, Renegade, Ocean and Empire.

Despite a successful and glittering career full of classic games, Steve Turner was forced to sell a majority share of the company to Perfect Entertainment to cover soaring development costs. With the development of the company's last title, Hard Corps, still incomplete, Graftgold was wound up in 1998. It's demise was due to many factors ranging from games going unreleased by publishers and lost sales due to delays caused by licensing issues to the expensive transition to developing for the original Playstation.

In 2002, Jester Interactive acquired the rights to all of Graftgold's original titles. Releasing a GBA version of Uridium in 2003, Jester promised a similar handheld revision for Paradroid, though to date no further Graftgold properties have been re-released.
