Although founded in 2005, Cheyenne Mountain's formation began in 2002 when three game designers and fans of the Stargate movie and TV series decided to create a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) set in the Stargate universe.

After successfully tackling the delicate matter of licensing the Stargate IP from owner MGM, the trio teamed up with Gary Whiting to found Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment. Headquartered near Phoenix, Arizona, the team began work on the game, named Stargate Worlds

Though core development focused on Stargate Worlds, between 2006 and 2008 development on a number of other games was started, to the point where, by 2007, the company had grown to over 100 staff. As a result of this rapid growth the company created FireSky as publisher for its titles.

Due to the economic downturn in late 2008 the company struggled financially, and development on all peripheral projects were put on hold while work on Stargate Worlds continued. However, progress were hampered by the departure of several key developers.

In late 2009, the company refocused its efforts on the development of a third-person shooter named Stargate Resistance, expected to launch in the first quarter of 2010. In September 2009, the company's CEO, Gary Whiting, was sued by investors and in early 2010 he was removed from the board and his employment terminated.

Within a week of Stargate Resistance's release reports of a Chapter 11 filing surfaced, putting the the company's future, and that of Stargate Worlds and other titles being developed, on very shakey ground.
