But any DS game that needs the "normal" buttons (e.g. Mario Kart) would be useless since there would be so much screen estate given over to the soft buttons that you'd not have any room left for the game display.

I don't want to start another nitpicking argument but there is a marked difference between "games that use the touchscreen and/or microphone" and "games that only use the touchscreen and/or microphone" - only the second category would work "perfectly".

No need to apologize, I may not of been 100% clear in what I was trying to describe in the protracted "discussion" with precious. My initial post was in relation to Joji's post about the iPhone (if it where to have a Snes or MD emulator being a nice alternative to the PSP) as you've stated, these wouldn't work at all well due to the iPhone not having physical buttons, (which would be the same with PSP games) I was merely trying to point out if any game's where to be ported to an iPhone, DS games (that only use the touchscreen/microphone) would be perfect. In fact Elecroplankton could benefit from the greater screen size! Never gonna happen I know due to the best games being Nintendo's property. Unless...
