Summary

The second game to take advantage of Sony's new online service, Twisted Metal: Black Online is rather self-explanatory - it's simply an online adaptation of 2001's Twisted Metal: Black. In fact, more importantly, it's online only, so there's actually no single player game.

Developed by the original Twisted Metal team, Incog Inc Entertainment, the game basically gives up to eight players the opportunity to battle against each other online in a high-powered and explosive car combat game.

Taking the wheel of an array of high-tech, jacked-up vehicles, and placed in command of a diverse set of super-powered weapons, you rip through dark and haunting landscapes on the hunt for opponents that you can wipe off the planet. At the game's core lies the simple concept of destruction, although mental and physical agility are also required for the more creative combat.

There are eight different game modes altogether, including Death Match, Last Man Standing, Fox Hunt, and Collector, set across 20 levels taken from the original Twisted Metal: Black. In each case, the levels feature unique environmental interactive objects that have to be synchronised, as well as a host of available game modifiers, such as power relics, unlimited weapons, friendly fire, and handicap. 15 vehicles, also from the original, feature, each sporting their own attributes, thus giving you a choice of approach to the ensuing combat.

Being online only, Twisted Metal: Black Online comes in at just under £25, so it's not too much to shell out for a simpler alternative to Sony's more intense online offering, SOCOM: US Navy SEALs.
