Summary

In recent years, the beat-em-up genre has followed in the footsteps of the infamous Street Fighter series. But things are changing, and some games are going back to the old school methods of literal street fighting, reminiscent of Streets of Rage for Megadrive. The Rage is one such title.

Published by Midas, The Rage is similar in playability to an arcade game. The game has been developed in full 3D and offers the player the ability to manipulate camera views to suit their playing style. Graphically, The Rage looks good. There aren’t too many graphical flaws and the game flows smoothly.

Unlike one-on-one battles, The Rage requires the player to simply wander down a few dark allies and give the bullies a run for their money by attacking them with a series of punches, kicks and special moves. Frequently, your opposing gangs will fight in numbers, so you should always stay focused on your own character. Failure to do so can result in disorientation, losing you the battle.

From a multi-player point of view, up to four players can participate in a game simultaneously on one PC. Those who own their own PC and a network card can indulge themselves in a multi-player network mode. This is a valuable asset to The Rage.

Other minor improvements include new music, stage maps, bug fixers and a number of other various editions. But the game as a whole is simple and accomplished. It’s challenging and it’s fun. What more is there to say?
