Summary

Pillars of Eternity is an isometric RPG that was originally the result of a very successful Kickstarter campaign by a studio that had long since lost its lustre - Obsidian. They really turned things around with Pillars of Eternity, though, and made one of the most engrossing and well put-together games of 2015, picking up dozens of awards and broad critical acclaim. Now, the original game along with all the previously released DLC and expansions have been bundled together by Paradox Arctic and 505 Games to make their console debut.

The game takes place in the land of Drywood in the world of Eora. The kingdom's children are plagued by a condition that sees them become 'hollowborn' at birth. Translation: they're born with no soul. The game begins with your hero discovering themselves to be a 'watcher', a being who can see past lives and interact with souls, after a calamitous supernatural event. It falls to you to find out what caused the awakening and how to solve the hollowborn problem.

Pillars of Eternity is a party-based RPG with real-time combat (with the option to pause). It's a decidedly old school approach, but one that has won over fans with the depth of its storytelling and gameplay. In particular, the ability to build a base of operations based on the conquests of the player as they make their way through the game earned it applause.

In a world of RPGs like Skyrim and The Witcher, Pillars of Eternity has prompted players to take a look back at some of the genre's older trappings.
