Summary

Back in the early days of videogames many a game was adorned with awesome fantasy or sci-fi art that couldn't help but leave you deflated once you saw the primitive graphics emblazoned on your CRT television. But boy, have things changed. Space Hulk: Deathwing is basically a piece of Warhammer 40,000 box art come to life.

The Space Hulk games take players into the deep black of the 40K universe. At some point in the 41st millenium the Adeptus Astartes of the Imperium of Man (or, more simply, the Space Marines) discovered the titanic carcasses of cathedral-like space ships floating abandoned in space. They wanted them. The creatures that have taken up residence in the long period of dereliction, however, have other ideas. The Tyranids (or Genestealers, for veteran fans) are viscious, bloodthirsty creatures reminiscent of the xenomorphs of the Alien films and there are a LOT of them for you to kill.

While the previous Space Hulk game stuck close to the board games with turn-based combat, Deathwing is a tactical first-person survival shooter with a heavy emphasis on co-op play. In the solo campaign you'll tramp through long, dark corridors with your AI-controlled comrades, issuing orders and dealing out death on a large and bloody scale, levelling up and following Deathwing's dark narrative. In multiplayer, you'll battle to survive wave after wave of aliens with claws that can rip through even your foot-thick armour and a serious taste for blood.

What will be particularly noteworthy for Warhammer 40K fans is the sheer Space Hulk-iness of it all. Fear and awe are baked into this techno-gothic monstrosity, and you won't be able to help but feel that (for better or for worse) you've stepped right onto the board of one of the Games Workshop games.
