Summary

If you suddenly awoke in prison and discovered that you'd been set up and drugged, you'd probably be a little upset. In fact you'd probably be extremely upset and cry for a bit. And then you'd phone your dad, explain the situation, and get him to come and bail you out. Not this guy though, no way. When he awoke in prison, after being set up and drugged, the first thing he did was escape, shoot his way out of prison, and then scour the city for those responsible so that he might seek his revenge. Charming. After all, this guy is 'the sniper'.

Cast as the elusive 'sniper', players embark on an adventure amidst the bloodbath that ensues. Set across 25 levels of blood-spattered brutality, the quest for justice throws up a plethora of prison guards, bent coppers, Chinese crime bosses, and members of the mob, which, as you would expect, can only really be dealt with by the shooting off of their limbs. Along the way, the usual assortment of food items and pain killers can be collected, thus maintaining the health of our prolific protagonist, and an extensive arsenal of weapons is at hand, supplying the means to the quest for destruction and dismemberment.

Sniper features a kind of RPG element in the form of character-building tools, which allow players to customise their ideal killer. Apart from this, however, it remains pretty much your average FPS. Max Payne meets Soldier of Fortune - shoot first, ask questions later, as you venture from area to area leaving nothing breathing. If this is your bag then there are no complaints. What it sets out to do it does well, and with the utilisation of Lithtech's new Jupiter Engine, the visuals are certainly on-target. Boom boom.
